  • Angelspit’s “Carbon Beauty”: Album Art

    04.02.11

I love the artwork on Angelspit’s new remix CD, Carbon Beauty (released March 8), which is awesome as always. It features a black-and-white animal anatomy and taxidermy theme, and Destroyx and ZooG in some heavy-duty avant-garde all-black fetish texturific garb.

  • Mmm…Galliano

    10.19.10

I love, love, love John Galliano’s runway makeup. Often 1920s-inspired, it is dominated by bow lips, rosy contoured cheeks, just the thinnest of brows whimsically penciled in, and heavy shading in eccentric and interesting colors around the eyes that literally creates shadows, hollows, and a “bleeding,” “bruised” look. The effect is simultaneously macabre and playful, a pastiche of makeup for young widows in the silent era. I love the interesting mix of colors, the heaviness, the drama of it. No matter whether you find yourself really liking Galliano’s couture or not, the makeup is always innovative, elaborate, and striking, and that is part of the couture, creating a magic and mystery about it.

  • J-Chan’s Designs

    10.07.10

Jessica of J-Chan’s Designs is a wildly imaginative, out-of-this-world stylist, costume designer, and makeup artist. She is also the founder and editor in chief of recently launched Giuseppina Magazine.

Vivid, manic, bipolar, brave colors and contrasting, rougher vs. delicate textures characterize her fashion creations. The makeup is fittingly bold and insanely colorful. The styling is what really draws me to these designs, often adding a rare beauty to them. It can be a bit gritty and over-the-top, or more elegant and subdued, in muted colors. Elaborate, innovative, often wildly colorful makeup and huge hair/headdresses with lots of ornament and accessory are a common element, and complement the crazed fairytale aesthetic of the outfits. Though it can be wacky and almost overwhelmingly cluttered, a color-explosion chaos to the eye, it is always interesting.
