Charmaine Olivia Is Fabulous in Black

Artist Charmaine Olivia‘s gorgeous outfit at the opening of her show, Ritual, on January 14th, is an awesome real-life example of a simple but effective look. The black, full-length dress with cutouts in back is from Paprika via ASOS; the look is accented with sterling silver jewelry, including the “Seance” bracelet cuff from Blood Milk, and sets off her tattoos beautifully.

Film Review: Sleeping Beauty
I saw this a few weeks ago, so this is kind of late, but here goes anyway. There’s “spoilers,” just FYI.
Sleeping Beauty (2011) is an Australian movie directed by Julia Leigh, starring Emily Browning and Rachael Blake. It’s about a young college student named Lucy who joins a high-end erotic waitressing service that caters to the wealthy, in order to make ends meet, and further agrees to be one of the “sleeping beauties,” so to speak, who form a more specialized subset of the girls. For each engagement she is driven to the madam/Clara’s house, where she takes a powerful sedative in a cup of tea that induces a very heavy, undisturbable, deathlike sleep for a short period, and while she’s out like the eponymous Sleeping Beauty, some client who has paid for the privilege, usually an older man, gets into bed with her and can do whatever they like with her unconscious body, short of actual penetration, for the duration of an hour. She is promised that when she wakes up, she will not remember a single thing, and for her it will be as if it never happened.

“Shelf-Pod” Home by Kazuya Morita
Designated “Shelf-Pod,” this 557-square-foot house in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, created by Kazuya Morita Architecture Studio, is an innovative, simplistic, and elegant living space built (and revolving) around a specific concept: being capable of efficiently housing 10 tons of books and incorporating that as a major and stunning design element. It is a book-lover’s paradise. Shelf-Pod was commissioned by a young historian with an extensive collection of books on Islamic history. As Morita explains, “…we designed a lattice structure made from 25mm-thick laminated pine boards which serve as bookshelves. The dimensions of each shelf are as follows: 360mm height, 300mm width, and 300mm depth. All of the architectural elements in this space (stairs, windows, desks, chairs, etc.) have been designed on the basis of this shelf scale, with the aim of achieving geometrical harmony…”

Kouichi Kimura’s “House of Vision”
I love this house designed by Kouichi Kimura in 2008, located near Shiga, Japan. It’s so elegant, and I wish I could live in a house just like this. Someone pointed out that it’s a bit “aseptic”-feeling, but in a good way, like they’d feel safe there, and I totally understand their meaning. I think it’s partly due to how sparingly furnished the house is in the pictures, but it really does give an impression of just spacious emptiness. I think it’s beautiful, though. Minimalist yet luxurious at the same time, utterly modern and sleek, interesting all around. It’s one of my dream homes.
